Evaluating Muskellunge ( <i>Esox masquinongy</i> ) <scp>Catch‐and‐Release</scp> Mortality at Elevated Summer Water Temperature

چکیده
Angling for Muskellunge Esox masquinongy has become widespread and increasingly popular. Management strategies include high minimum harvest lengths (>1016mm), closed seasons, catch-and-release regulations. Due to these angler behaviors, up 97% of caught are released, anglers assume fish survive be again in the future. Previous research on mortality suggested relatively low rates (0%-5%). However, studies were all conducted within range water temperatures that thermally optimal generally at <25°C. populations some latitudes routinely experience >25°C during summer months. Fisheries managers have expressed concerns regarding warm angling mortality, representing a need evaluate various multiple latitudes. Our objective was quantify warm-water (>25°C) (>760mm) identify factors influencing using experimental ponds. Adult (n=102) stocked into eight earthen or plastic lined flow-through ponds (0.06-0.71 ha) densities <16 fish/ha. (n=50) angled utilizing specialized fishing gear 19.6–32.6°C, with 32 being >25°C. Fish closely monitored 2 weeks after assess remained uncaught experiment used as controls (n=53). Mortality greater (30.0%) compared control (11.3%). Differences across temperature regimes firth's logistic regression. Five-day cumulative net time positively related probability but size sex unrelated mortality. Elevated warrant investigations population level effects varying levels exploitation.

Effect of Previous-Winter Mortality on the Association between Summer Temperature and Mortality in South Korea
BACKGROUND It has recently been postulated that low mortality levels in the previous winter may increase the proportion of vulnerable individuals in the pool of people at risk of heat-related death during the summer months. OBJECTIVES We explored the sensitivity of heat-related mortality in summer (June-August) to mortality in the previous winter (December-February) in Seoul, Daegu, and Inche...
متن کاملFormation of stable hydrocarbon oil-in-water nanoemulsions by phase inversion composition method at elevated temperature
−Stable hydrocarbon oil (hexadecane, C16)/nonionic surfactant (HCO-60, Span 80)/water system oil-inwater nanoemulsions were prepared by the phase inversion composition method at elevated temperature. To minimize droplet size, the composition ratio for stable nanoemulsions, we experimented by changing the HLB value, oil/surfactant ratio, and droplet volume fraction. When the HLBmix value 11, the...
متن کاملAntarctic Temperature at Orbital Timescales Controlled by Local Summer Duration
During the late Pleistocene epoch, proxies for Southern Hemisphere climate from the Antarctic ice cores vary nearly in phase with Northern Hemisphere insolation intensity at the precession and obliquity timescales. This coherence has led to the suggestion that Northern Hemisphere insolation controls Antarctic climate. However, it is unclear what physical mechanisms would tie southern climate to...
متن کاملResponse of freshwater microcosm communities to nutrients, fish, and elevated temperature during winter and summer
Under conditions of stress, shallow freshwater ecosystems can undergo a state change characterized by the rapid loss of macrophytes and subsequent dominance of phytoplankton. Elevated water temperature may promote such change. Here we report the impact of two warming regimes (continuous 38C above ambient and 38C above ambient during summer only), with two nutrient loadings and the presence or a...
متن کاملElevated temperature drives kelp microbiome dysbiosis, while elevated carbon dioxide induces water microbiome disruption
Global climate change includes rising temperatures and increased pCO2 concentrations in the ocean, with potential deleterious impacts on marine organisms. In this case study we conducted a four-week climate change incubation experiment, and tested the independent and combined effects of increased temperature and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), on the microbiomes of a foundation speci...
